Sunday Morning Musings: I Don’t Care.

I used to think “I don’t care” was the worst three-word phrase in the English language especially if uttered in the work environment. Said there, it meant, “I don’t care if I do a good job, if my customers are satisfied, if I’m on time, if I’m part of the team, etc.”

But there’s another meaning to those words, because I notice I say them much more often than I ever expected to. When our dress code at work changed, I decided I didn’t care if my hat matched my shirt, even when I was told I had a hipster look happening. I uttered those three horrible words. I was comfortable and following guidelines and doing my job, so what difference did it make? Zero.

I am training myself not to care that there are so many authors considered more “successful” than I am. Their success is in the eyes of the world, i.e., sales, exposure, awards, etc. Worldly things I may never have. I often ask myself is this what God wants me to do? It’s easy to get confused about what the world says you should want or do and listening to what God wants you to do with your gifts.

Years ago a friend introduced me to a daily devotional entitled God Calling. From the 1/28 entry: “Do the aims and ambitions that man strives for bring peace, or the world’s awards bring heart-rest and happiness. No!…Those whom the world has most rewarded, with name, fame, honour, wealth, are weary and disappointed…Come unto Me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.”

I’ve always wondered why I’m not more ambitious. The world would tell me I’m stagnating. That I’ll never get ahead. (Ahead of what or whom?) That, in fact, I have failed to accomplish much of anything as an author. But I believe God created a path for each of us and it’s up to us to find and follow it. Daily I pray that I will find mine and you will find yours.

After I wrote the above on Saturday, 1/28/17, but before I posted it this morning I opened God Calling to the reading for 1/29. The title is “I Clear the Path.” A little bit from that passage: “You are being led in a very definite way, and others, who do not serve your purpose, are being moved out of your Path by Me…You are the builder, not the Architect…”
