It’s only April 22nd. That means in one week, I read two books. Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner and Bobbie Faye’s Very (very, very, very) Bad Day by Toni McGee Causey.
I picked up Jennifer Weiner’s book first because I’ve read all of her books and I think I know what to expect. A decent read, and she didn’t let me down, although BFF is told in a series of flashbacks which I occasionally found a bit confusing, but not enough to make me put the book down.
The Bobbie Faye book is just that. One woman’s extremely bad day. A strong heroine in a non-stop action/adventure-type story that moves so fast you can hardly keep up. Frankly, I don’t know how the heroine kept up. You or I would have dropped from exhaustion after about two hours.
But Bobbie Faye is driven by a strong goal and motivation and plenty of conflict. I honestly don’t know how authors do this–write a whole book that takes place in one day. Mine always take place over a matter of weeks at least, or a few months.
I always end up having a pacing issue with books like this, because in my head, I can’t help wondering what time it is. Her day started in the pre-dawn hours, and she was in the bank at nine a.m. (before things really start to go to hell for her) and then it’s non-stop disaster. While all of the action is going on and the pov is flipping back and forth, I’m wondering things like, shouldn’t her niece be getting out of school by now? Who’s going to pick her up? Is it getting dark yet?
Luckily my pacing questions weren’t so distracting that it kept me from enjoying the book. Evidently not. I finished it in two days. I’d read more by this author.
And yes, I was working on my own FOREVER revisions as well, especially the last 2 1/2 days because I was off work. Happy to say, I think they’re mostly done. Now I need to do a re-read, a print-out, another read and then I think they’ll be ready to send back to my editor. Please, God, make her like what I’ve done.
